Messrs Balme, Jacomb, and Co. report that thirteen thousand bales were disposed of at the third series of auctions which opened to-day. A third of the number of bales were from New Zealand. There was a large attendance of buyers and the bidding was excited. Cape and Australian merinos were from par to a halfpenny higher. Fine erossbreds are very firm, but prices are unchanged. Coarse sorts were a half- penny cheaper on closing rates in May. The total number of bales available is 335,000. In the House of Commons, Mr John Morley moved the omission of the clause in the Local Government Bill reserving the quarter sessions for the control of the chief constables. The Government were defeated by a majority of 30. Mr Harrington and a. number of. Unionists supported Mr Morley. Paris, June 19. The election for the district of Charent in the Chamber of Deputies took place today, and resulted in the return of a Bounapartist candidate, M. Dourelade, President of the French Patriotic League. The Radical candidate was at the bottom of the poll. Zanzibar, June 19. Unconfirmed reports have reached here that Mr H. Stanley is dead.
