THE GORGE BRIDGE.

TO THE EDITOR' OF THE STAR. ■RiKi— When in Ashurst some time »go my attention was drawn to the fact that this handsome structure was »till uapainted, consequently the timber has been rapidly contracting, and in numbers of places are to be found large cracks. When it is remembered that the timber for this bridge lay on the bank of the river for a year, that *he construction took nearly two years, ?and that it has been open for traffic :for a further period of two years, the -urgent necessity for painting is manifest. Surely it is culpable negligence to allow a structure like this bridge which has cost about £6000 to remain in its present condition. It would appear that the management of the; bridge -ought to be placed in the | hands of some other and more competent governing body.— l am, &c., Observer.
