The Meanest Town in America.

A Wisconsin gir 1 , a Miss Curtis, of. Kosendal, near Ripon, was one of theI school teachers who was frozen todeath in Dakota. Her brother brought her remains home, and theBrandon Times has the following bit of history :— "When Mr Curtis, of Rosendale, went to Dakota after the remains of his sister, who perished in the recent blizzard, he settled up with the school district for which she had been teaching and they made him discount the amount due her 12 per cent before they would pay it, claiming that it was damage to the districc that she did not complete the term. That beats the record of meanness." That certainly does beat the record of meanness, and it is due to the people of the world that they know the name of the Dakota town m which she was teaching, and the names of the school district officials who deducted the 12 per cent, that the town may be handed down as the meanest on earth, and shunned, and the officials be pointed out as examples of grasping meanness that has. no parallel. The lady lost her life* while doing her duty, and over her frozen corpse the men who hired her haggled about paying what was due for her services.
