Sheep Returns
OROUA INCREASE 31,912.
The sheep returns fortheyear ending 31st May, 1887, are just to hand. The total number of sheep in the colony on that date was 15,155,626, as against 15,174,267, for the previous year, or a decrease of 18,637. In the North Island there is an increase of 220,588 and in the South a decrease of 239,215 Scab is now confined to the Nelson and Marlborough provines, and Inspector Bayly remarks : " The nonappearance af of scab throughout the North Island during the past twelve months may be considered conclusive evidence that the disease is thoroughly stamped out there." The figures for this coast are as follows :— -Hawera — 1886,50,554; 1887,55,787; increase, 5233. Patea-1886, 96,454; 1887, 109,927 ; increase, 13,502. Waitotara—lßß6, 56,108; 1887, 59,128; increase, 3020. Wanganui 1886, 159,657 ;. 1887, 169,045 ; increase, 9388. Rangitikei— lßß6, 248,421 ; 1887, 294,373; increase, 45,952. Oroua —1886, 127,794; 1887, 158,706; increase, 30,912. Manawatu—lßß6, 123,571 ; 1887, 126,284 ; increase, 2713. i
