The Escaped Convict
f PEB UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION. J Chbistchubch, June 11. Considerable excitement still prevails anent Jonathan Roberts, who has not yet been captured. It is reported he was seen at Kaituna, near Little River, on Friday evening, and that he received food from the Maoris. The police find great difficulty in getting information as to his movements. At Kaituna Roberts gave an amusing account of how he escaped. He said he cut his way out with a chisel while the prisoners were standing round whistling. He wanted four or five others to go with, him, but they declined, and he then said he was not afraid, aad went off by himself.
