Too Much Government
Parliament is being asked by Mr Joyce to accept his dictum in the shape of "An Act for the Limitation of the Hours for trading in Shops." To say that it is an arbitrary inteiference with the liberty of the subject would be treating it very mildly, as if such a thing was passed we might reasonably expect to be made subject to sumptuary laws next, which would dictate the texture, form, and fashion of our garments. Tradesmen would a' so require a special education to prevent confusion between what they may and what they may not do. We give the following as an instance, which is clear as mud. In section C ofOlausa 6, it reads: — "This Act shall not render unlawful the continuance in a shop after the hour appointed for the closing thereof of any customers who were in the shop immediately before that hour, or the serving of such customers not later than one hour after the time of closiug." We infer from this that Mr Joyce is deep, very deep, in fact out of his own depth.
