The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 1888. Measures, not Men
We are informed by the New Zealand Times of yesterday that Messrs Maoai.thur, Bruce, and Wilson, wrote to the Premier on Thursday, withdrawing their support of the Government on account of the Protectionist policy embodied in the Financial Statement. All three gentlemen regret that such a course should have been, as they consider, forced upon them, and hare expressed sympathy with the Premier for the difficulty of his position, but are of opinion that, in the face of their election pledges, they cannot for a moment support the present financial policy. By the secession ot* these gentlemen from the Ministerial side of the House it would seem, at first glance, that the Opposition would be much strengthened, but such is not the case because the strongest Protectionists are actually to be found with the latter. The only probable solution of tbe difficulty will be the formation of a third party under some recognised leader of Freetrade proclivities.
