A Good Thing Badly Managed

A Bill entitled "An Act to extend and amend the Law of Divorce" has been introduced by Mr Samuels. If passed it will enable any person to obtain a divorce from one who has been convicted of an attempt to murder the petitioner, or who has been sentenced to a prolonged term of penal servitude. The annals of crime of late years have .given ample reasons why such a relief should be granted, and our readers will doubtless wish Mr Samuels God-speed with his Bill. We fear, however, that he has emperilled its fate by going too far, and introducing debateable matter. The attempt to meddle with the law, as it stands, for adultery or desertion will open a wide issue, and possibly cause the real intention of the Bill t j be lost sight of. In politics, as in preaching, there is no greater mistake than to be too exhaustive, and we regret that it should occur in such an "important matter. -
