The match between the Australians and Gentlemen of England began at I Lords to-day. The Colonials were | disposed of for 179, Jones 61, McDonnell 41. At the close of the day the Gentlemen had lost one wicket for 235, Grace (not out) 150, Shuter 71. Auckland, This Day. Fears are entertained that the cutter Taurua is lost with a crew of 4 men. Chritchurch, This Day. A serious shooting case occurred at Springston yesterday. Detective Neill and a man named Sinclair were mak- ! ing enquires about a recent suspicious fire at the Road Board office. Thomas Henly, who, while being questioned, flew into a passion, and fired twice at them as they were leaving the house. The shot took effect on Sinclair's legs. Henley, his wife, and son, then assaulted them. Sinclair's condition is serious, though not dangerous. Henley and his son were subsequently arrested.
