The Feilding Star. SATUR DAY,MAY 19, 1888. Official Perversity

We do not know whether it is favoritism or ouly stupidity, but the following instance is. only one of the many injustices Feilding has had to suffer from the Railway Department. It having been decided that the Feilding Volunteer Fire Brigade should hold a fete on Queen's Birthday, the Secretary, Mr Sheaker, wrote to the Traffic Agent m Wanganui, asking for certain concessions on that day, and received in reply a request to forward a copy of the programme in order that the Traffic Agent might be in a position to judge what attraction the meeting was likely to form for the outside public. The programme was duly forwarded, and in acknowledging receipt thereof, the Traffic Agent said — "Arrangements will be made for the trains in the morning and evening to stop at Catnden street crossing on the 24th instant. Beturn tickets at Saturday fares will also be issued from all stations to Feilding on that day." This is "a concession with a vengeance," seeing the latter part would have to be made wheher there were sports in Feilding or not. We will say nothing of the calm superiority assumed by the official who claims the right to " judge what attraction the meeting is likely to offer for the outside public," and pass on to the train arrangements as published in another column to-day, ft will be seen from them that while Saturday return tickets from Wanganui to Feilding will be issued at a cost of 13s lOd and 9s 3d for first and second class tickets, excursion tickets from Feilding to Wanganui will be sold for 7s 6d and ss. Such an anomaly is hard to be understood by the ordinary mind, but seems to us very like a desire on the part of the Department to play into the hands of Wanganui at the expense of the country districts. It is now too late to get an alteration made, but on all future occasions we Wv'^d advise Secretaries of Sports Committees or Bacing Clubs to be on the alert bo as to prevent any of these " little games" being played on them j again. __^__^___.
