Charitable Aid Board

A special meeting of the United Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was held at Wanganui yesterday morning. Present — Messrs Beckett, Remington, Arkwright, Austin, Snelson, Patterson, Hunter, Macarthur, West, Adams, and Bennie. Mr Adams was elected chairman.— Mr Maoarthur proposed that this Board approves of the Bills introduced this session by Messrs Hutchison and Maoarthur. He had accepted the amendment that Mr Ballanoe had proposed in reference to any special endowments belonging to Wanganui. Mr Macarthur then moved that this Board approves of the proposed separation of the Patea district as set forth in the Bill introduced by Mr Hutchison. — Seconded by Mr West, and carried. — Mr Macarthur proposed a resolution of similar purport in regard to the proposed separation from the Manawatu district. — Seconded by Mr Hunter. -Mr Sanson proposed, as an amendment, that, in the opinion of this Board, charitable 1 aid can be best administered by the local bodies within the several districts, and that the Government be requested to amend the Act of 1 885 and 1886 so as to give the looal bodies £ for £ towards the cost of charitable aid, instead of to the Board, as proposed by Mr Macarthur's Bill. Mr Bennie seconded the motion, as the course proposed by Mr Sanson appeared to him to be the most feasible plan of dealing out charitable aid. — Mr Maoarthur remarked that Mr Sanson's motion was not in the nature of an amendment, but he did not wish to press it. — The motion was then put. For 6- -Messrs Maoarthur, West, Snelson, Hunter, Patterson, and Adams, Against, 6 — Messrs Bennie, Austin, Beokett, Remington, Arkwright, and Sanson —In giving his casting vote in favour of the motion,, the chairman said that separation wou d be oonduoive to a certain I amount of economy in the saving of travelling expenses, eto. In the interests of patients it was desirable, and the people of Palmerston themselves demanded separation. — Herald.
