THE NIGHTWATCHMAN.
TO THE EDITOB OF THE STAR.
In connection with your regret, as expressed in your last issue, that difficulties have arisen in reference to the payment of the night watchman, I am informed that certain important names and contributors have been kept off the collector's list that were on the original list carried round for signature by Mr Carthew. It is easily seen that whatever is the cause of this omission the public will look upon it as a breach of faith on the part of those whose names are left off, and will refuse to pay their subscriptions accordingly. We think it is a pity that as the -movement is in the right direction, and a reliable man having been placed in the position by the public, that the whims of private individuals should cause a failure. May we not hope that, as these gentleman have voluntarily signed their names to what has been, lookod on as a legal document, they will keep to their engagements like men. And may we not think that a man that does his duty through all the bad weather and the long dark nights of the winter, will earn all he can collect? If, in this first step taken for the protection of property, failure will result, won' l it have a bad effect on our Fire Brigade movement ? — I am, &c,
One thai Pays.
