In the House of After the Speech had been read by the Governor in the Legislative Council several new bills were given notice of. , Sir Harry Atkinson gave notice of the introduction of a bill to amend the Chinese Immigration Act; also, that , he would, on Friday week, propose certain amendments to the Standing Orders. The Eon. Mr Hi&lop gave notice of the introduction of the Electoral Bill. It was ordered that the Judge's 1 letter respecting Wi Pere's election 1 petition should be entered on the ' records of the House. 1 The Premier moved for leave to in- , troduce the Eiver Boards Act amend- > ment Bill. — Agreed to. , - May 11. Mr Pyke moved the Address-m-Beply this evening in his usual humorous manner. Very little animation was imparted [ into the proceedings. Dealing with the t question of the reversion of the tariff, he j. said he was neither a Freetrader nor Proj tectionist. This statement was greeted } with ironical cheers by those members t who remembered that last session Mr t Pyke was Chairman of all the meetings f of the Freetrade Party. The speech was generally a reply to the sentiments of the Governor's Speech. Both the mover and the seconder, however, gave the Government some hard knocks in a quiet way, } Mr Carroll, the seconder, waxing yery J 1 wroth at the action of the Government in ' : pandering to King Tawhiao, who had > always isolated himself from Europeans, r Whilst other chiefs who! had fought and " bled for the country were comparatively • ignored. The Address was carried with- > out the slightest discussion.
