Fire in Palmerston
Shortly after 5 o'clock on Thursday morning the unwelcome tones of the fire bell sounded the alarm, and some consternation was felt when the Square was given as the locality of the fire. It appears that one of the lodgers in Mr D. Healy's boardinghouse, opposite the Bank of Australasia, had gone to sleep leaving a candle burning. The light caught the table-cover, spreading from thence to the frame of the looking-glass, then to the curtains, and up the wall to the oeiling. The young fellow sleeping in the room endeavoured to suppress the fire himself, but finding this impossible, he called for assistance, and the danger was soon averted. The damage done is comparatively trifling, though one energetic citizen went bodily through the window at which the fire broke out, in the excitement of the moment. The building is owned by Mx Eobt. Johnston, formerly of Palmerston, but now resiient in Feilding, and is uninsured. — Manawatu Times.
