(PES UNITED PBKBB ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, April 20. The local option poll of the Lambton Quay Ward resulted against an increase of licensed houses and wine licenses. The Harbour Board has received 8 tenders in reply to applications sent to 18 English and American firms for tenders for the electric lighting. Mr John Stevenson, many years engaged in the commercial department of the Evening Post, died suddenly this morning, having ruptured a blood vessel, j Deceased had been suffering from asthma for a considerable time. Chbistchubch, April 19. Captain McGregor, of the ketch Florence, which arrived from Foxton to-day, reports thut on Tuesday morning last, when about 35 miles northward of Kai~ kourn, he sighted a vessel bottom up. The weather was rather thick, and, as near as he could judge, the vessel was between 50 and 60 tons register. It is generally believed that the vessel is the ketch Catlin, which sailed from Dunedin for Wanganui about six weeks ago. It is stated she has not yet arrived, and that nothing further has been heard of her. Ha web a, April 20. Frederick Iredale, farmer, £was Jidjudged a bankrupt to day on the petition of J. D. McLean, of Westport. The proceedings arose out of a divorce suit which went against him at the last sittings of the Supreme Court in New Ply* mouth. New Plymouth, April 19. Joseph Watson Kennedy, a young man, and prisoner in gaol serving a sen* tence of two years for forgery in Napier, was brought up before the Resident Magistrate for refusing to work. Sen* nedy, some short time since, oharged a warder with giving tobacco to a prisoner, but at the hearing failed to substantiate the c#se. For bringing a groundless charge he was sentenced to ten days' bread and water. He had been punished twice by the justices fer refusing to work. He wns sentenced to fourteen day's bread and water, and to forfeit thirty day's (180) marks. Auckland, April 20. News om been received of the death i of a half-caste in the bush in the Oruru ( 1 Distriot, on the 9th instant.
