Dreadful Death of an M.L.C.
I.PEB UNITED PREBB ASSOCIATION.! Auckland, April 16. The Hon. Mr H. Chamberlain was found drowned last night in a water hole near Drury. Particulars of his death show that he has for some time been prospecting for coal on some property of his near Drury. The Star's Drury correspondent wires that about a month ago Mr Chamberlain sank a shaft about four feec deep while prospecting for coal. On Thursday last he came up by train, borrowed a spade, bucket, and bailer, from the wife of a railway employe, saying he would return them in the evening. As he did not return to Drury it was thought he had gone to Humia station, which he sometimes did on Sunday evening. Corsey, a settler, found Chamberlain's coat, collar, and necktie hanging on a tree near the prospecting hole. A search party was organised, and Chamberlain's body was found in a hole, his boots off, and trousers rolled up to his knees It is supposed that while deceased was bailing out water he fell in head first, and being unable to extricate himself was drowned.
