* . i A new sawmill is about to be started in the Zawitea district. The Patea Rifles had to break the ice to get to church parade last Sunday. They call well dressed larrikins m Wellington " thoughtless youths." We are glad to see that Mr John Manson is now able to get about again. Messrs F. R. Jackson and Co. will hold a stock and land sale on Thursday next. Mr W. T. L. Travors, the well known Wellington solicitor, is going to England for a trip. Attention is requested to the gift auction advertisement, in aid of the funds of the Church of England. Mr Ellery Gilbert, pianoforte tuner, is now in Feilding and will make his usual visits in due course. Mr Oliver, of the Empire Hotel, who has bsen indisposed lately, is now going on well towards recovery. Mr Keen is getting on favorably, and , the doctor hopes to have bim on his feet in the course of a few weeks. The Manchester Rifles will parade for inspection on Friday the 13th instant. Intending recruits are requested to attend. Messrs Edmund Goodbehere aud G. 0. Hall have been appointed Sinking Fund Commissioners for the Borough of Feilding. There will be a meeting of stewards of the Jockey Club, at Oliver's Empire Hotel, this evening at half past eight o'clock. Hares have been gazetted as no longer game in the North Island except in the neighborhood of Wellingion and the Wairarapa. We have received the New Zealand edition of the Illustrated Australian News for March 31st, of which Mr W. Carthew is the Feilding agent. We have to acknowledge receipt, from the Government printer, of a copy of the Conference of the Industrial ana Protection Societies of New Zealand. Another football club is being formed in Wanganui, which means the Feilding Knights of the Leather will have another globe to conquer — or be conquered by. It strikes us that Feildlug nomologists can " go one better" if they like. One of the best places for sportsmen to visit is the township of Fowler's in the Birmingham Small Farm settlement. Besides native game such as pigeons and kakas there are abundance of hares and pheasants. A few ducks have been seen m the river. The annual public meeting of householders in the several school districts will be held on Monday the 23rd instant, viz., Feilding, Halcombe, Kimbolton road, Stanway and Mangaone. Corpe back to Feilding from his trip round the world. He sold the -Makino factory cheese he took home with him, and got a fair profit on his speculation. Mr Corpe has brought with him an American cheese box for packing to the English market. Any person desirous of making Bimilar ones, are requested to apply to Mr Corpe who will place his model at their disposal. Yesterday moraine a mob of 5000 wethers passed through Feilding en route from Napier to Wanganui, where they Will be sold on account of Messrs Nicholson and Davy. Take the mob all round the sheep are probably as fine a lot as we have seen for some time. In faot they look as if they had been fed on the Wanganui Harbor Board Block and that is saying a great deal. A sportsman, who went to Midhirst to put m a day's shooting on Good Friday, stated that the birda (pigeons) he obtained were found to contain eggs when opened, He also stated that the birds were very poor as regards condition. By many it is considered that the season has been opened too early, as if the birds are phot before their eggs are laid, the result will be that pigeons will become very scarce, if not/ altogether extirpated.— Taranaki Herald*

We learn from the Post that the set* i tier in the Hutt district offered a. parcel of ten bales of greasy crossbred wool for i •ale in Wellington. He was offered 7d ! per lb, but he stood out for 7|d. The ' wool was ultimately sold in London on j February 9th, and fetohed lid per lb. A worthy Borough Councillor startled' ! the meeting the other night during the dis- - cussion on the sanitary report, by speaking of the " dead arising. The speaker : called on Cr Monckton, who explained, deodorising was probably what the worthy ' councillor meant. V In order to recoup the local acclimatisation society for the loss sustained by the action of the Government in proclaiming hares, no longer game within the meaning of the Act, Mr F. Y. Lethbridge has authorised the society to collect a fee of 10s from all persons shooting over his land. . _ We (Manawatu Times) learn that "the Clarendon Hotel has been leased by Mr J. Carroll to Mr George Howe, of Wanganui. Mr Howe was formerly proprietor of the Rutland Hotel, Wanganui, and in his new sphere will bring a large amount of experience to bear, and doubtless will soon make himself as popular here as he was in Ins old home. At the meeting of ratepayers of No. 5 Ward of the Manchester Road District held at Taonui schoolhouse recently, Mr Charles Bull in the chair, the chairman informed the meetmg that the Government had not granted the loan applied for, owing to the proper advertising of the works not having been done. It was agreed to appoint Messrs Bull, Jones and Bailey to obtain signatures of ratepayers to a petition asking the Manchester Board to take over a portion of the Manawatu Road District about half a mile from the Bunnythorpe station, to be attached to Ward No. 5. A valuable discovery of coal is claimed to have been made in the Gorge on the Waiohine River by Mr L. Hobman, who has promised to send samples to the Wai* rarapaDailv. He informs that journal that his find is on Crown land about 15 miles up the Tauhtrenikau Gorge, and that the outcrop, which is only about 10 feet above the water level, and is in the side of a high bank, has been exposed by the occurrence of a landslip Bometime within the last few months. Retail drapers, or even at Te Aro House, Wellington: Ws quite expect this display of Autumn and Winter Fabrics will cause a sensation, as well it might. Indeed, we are certain that no one could look long at the lovely things that we are shewing without feeling an irresistable desire to purchase at Te Aro House, Wellington. Our time hat been so fully taken up lately with preparing these new goods for sale that we are not just now able to enumerate the various items.
