The Borough Health
« The Borough Councillors are to be ) congratulated on having adopted the ? report of the Sanitary Committee. I That there was a certain amount of r • opposition was to be expected, but we w.er.o glad to notice the majority of the;
I Councillors were determined to sup- \ port the. -proposals, which are moderate, yet capable) if carried out to the letter, of doing all that is required of them, which is to preserve the health of the residents in the Borough. The boundaries selected inolude only those more densely populated parts of the town where there exists any danger of disease being germinated by the accumulation of foul matter. It gives us great pleasure to place on record the evident desire Councillors have of combating the ignorant prejudices against cleanliness, which unfortunately exist in the minds of a great number of persons even in this enlightened age. It may be an encouragement to Councillors to remember the tremendous difficulties the Sanitary Commissioners have success* fully overcome in the Old Country — where, if the people are perhaps not so intelligent as colonials, they are ten times more obstinate in repelling innovations — especially if for their good. But we may remind Council, lore that they have yet a lot of work to do before the Borough can be said to be free from all risks. In the course of a very few years — perhaps only months — it may be necessary for them to extend the boundaries for the reason that premises outside of them may, by the neglect of one set of occupants, be the cause of counteracting all the good hoped to be derived under the new mode. The Inspector of Nuisances must keep a sharp eye on all such in order to anticipate any possibility of danger from the direction indicated.
