Great Fire in Wellington
On Thursday morning the new Opera House in Wellington was destroyed by fire, but owing to the telegraph communication being intercepted we did not hear of it until late in the day after we had gone to press. It appears the fire was discovered at about 6 a.m. The Fire Brigade was promptly on the spot, and did good work in preventing the spread of the fire to adjacent buildings, but were unable to save the Opera House, which was completely destroyed, leaving nothing but the bare walls stand- ! ing. Miss Amy Sherwin, who was to have, played there this week, lost about £75 worth of printed bills, &o. • It is supposed the fire was caused by the stove in the oyster saloon. The Directors have held a meeting, and adjourned until Tuesday, when the question of re-instating the building' will be decided. The total insurance on the building was £5000, divided ! as follows: Colonial, £1000; South j British, £1000"; New Zealand, £750; ' Equitable, £750. (£250 xe-insured. in ! the Standard) ; National, £500.
