The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, MARCH 10, 1888. Wanganui Harbor Board Block
—■ ■ ♦ At the conclusion of an article commenting on the business done by the Board the Herald says : — " The principal duty to be performed during the current year is the turning to account the endowment of land at Manawatu. The land is eatiny its head off and j should be realised. Better far the money in the coffers of the Board than as an asset of speculative value paying rates." The settlers already on the Endowment Block will cordially agree with this sentimenft as they know — only too well-^hat while the lands remain in/ the hands of the Board, they cannot expect to be assisted in their work of settlement by the formation of roads. The absence of the latter is the greatest drawback they have to contend with. It is a desperate struggle to those who already have land there to get stock on to it, and an equally hard task to get the produce to a market. In fact one farmer had to drive his sheep to Feilding last season, to get them shorn, as he had no other means of getting the wool down. The men who are already settled on the Block are all doing well as the land is remarkably good. They have also done valuable work in opening the way to others who may in the near future desire to follow them and create homes for themselves and families in that most fertile country. It is truly a waste of money allowing a Bingle acre of the land to lie idle "eating its head off" in paying rates.
