The police also intend to make provision that in future no fights to a finish will be allowed. The man Cross, who was running con* Bultations on home racing under the name of W. Miller, has been arrested, on the ground that numerous investors complained that the originator of the sweeps could not be found. When Cross was searched letters enclosing post-office orders, bank-notes aod cheques from all parls of New Zealand and Australia were found upon him, Six racehorses were burnt to death in stables near Mudgee last night. It is supposed to be a case of incendiarism. The question of the legality of selling newspapers on Sunday was settled by the Court of Appeal to»day, the decision being: against the defendant, who had been fined by the magistrate. At the inquest on Hyrow, the prize* fighter, who died shortly after engaging in a fight, the jury returned a verdict of manslaughter against Evans (his opponent), Plummer and Stephens (seconds), Ely (referee), and Pollock (timekeeper). Mrs White, who was shot by her hus« band while he was ia a frenzied state from drink, is seriously wounded, but is expected to recover. Mrs White only arrived here in February, and married White after a fortnight's acquaintance. White was given to drink, and the couple bad arranged to live separately. She was on the eve of her departure when the .tragedy occurred.
