Retrenchment
£100,000 A YEAR SAVED. Immediately upon the return of Mr Mitchelson from the South, the Cabinet will resume its deliberations on the retrenchment; scheme and Civil service reorganisations/ I understand that each minister in charge of the departments is now in a position to lay before the Cabinet the complete proposals as regards his own department or departments, and it is to be hoped, therefore, that something definite will soon be placed before the public with regard to what has been done and is contemplated in conneotion with the retrenchment policy. I understand that the Government, in carrying out their retrenchment polioy have already effected a reduction in expenditure all round of Ll 00,000. The retrenchment has been steadily carried out all over the country in every branch of the service, but in such a way that has yet it has scarcely been felt approiably by any one locality more than another. — Auckland Star'B Wellington correspondent.
