It is in* tended to subsidise the owners for the use of the animals. It isjstated that England is annexing auriferous territory to the eastward of the Caroni River, in Venezuela, and that the Venezuelan Government threaten resistance if England persists in her action, Spurred by the Judge's remark when dismissing the appeal made by Mr Wilfred Blunt against his conviction for taking part in proclaimed meetings, the police have been collecting evidence against Mr Blunt, and it is said have obtained evidence of a most damaging character, showing that he was a principal iv organising the boycotting on the Marquis of Clanricarde's estates; and further, that through his action and in* citement to resistance eight murders weM committed in 13 months. In the House of Commons Mr Glad* stone attributed the diminution of crime in Ireland to the operation of the Land Act. He held that the Flan of Campaign had proved triumphant, and that the Land League was mci easing in vigor and "was, he contended, entirely free from the complicity in crime with which it had been charged. Mr Gladstone concluded his remarks with an eloquent appeal to the Government aad Parliament to give Ireland Home Rule, which he confidently believed would result in producing the desire of the age— namely, a truly united Empire, Rome, February 18. The Italian Government are making rapid progress wi'h the work of placing the navy on an efficient footing. Paris, February 19. M. Pasteur is at present conducting a series of experiments, in order to ascertain whether other animals beside sheep are proof against chicken cholera. Caibo, February 17. A messenger has just arrived in this city from Khartoum. His report, it v said, throws additional light on the fall of that city, but for the present the report will not be made public. It has leaked out, however, that Staten Bey and Lupton Bey are still at Khartoum. The former Las been appointed commander of the Mahdi's forces, and has grown powerful and insolent. He has absolutely re* fused to rejoin the Khedive's service. Lupton Bey is suspected. by the Arabs, and is caret ully watched. Vibbna, February 20. It is staled here that Russia has sug> gested the immediate deposition ot Prince Ferdinand as ruler of Bulgaria. To this Austria demurs, until such time at any rate as another ruler is nominated. In this view Austria is supported by Italy, but up to the present Prince Bismarck has expressed no opinion on the matter, Bbhlin, February 18. Dr Bergmann states that the result of a recent diagnosis confirms his belief that the Crown Prince's throat is developing indications of cancer. Sir Mo: ell Mackenzie is as yet uncertain on the point. February 20. The condition of the Crown Prince is now considered to be most critical. Prince Bismarck has dissuaded the Emperor William from visiting the Crown Prince, on account of his feeble health. . H.R. H. the Prince of Wales is now at San Remo.
