Eastern Maori Election Case
[PER UNITED PRESS ASSGCIATIOIt.I Gisbobns, January 18. The petition of Wi Pere to upset Mr Carroll's election for the Eastern Maori District is now being .heard before the Chief Justice and Mr Justice Gillies. About a doxen witnesses hare been examined to prove Carroll paid for the conveyance of electors to vote at Opotiki ; also that he shouted both drink and food; and to prove that McGtarrejr, publioan and storekeeper at TeTaki, gave flour, sugar, and drink to Maoris who voted for Carroll, and that he did so by the sitting member's orders. Evidence was also taken that Carroll's father shouted, at Wairoa for Maoris on condition l^ that they voted for his. son. McGarvey in his evidence denies that he acted as Carroll's agent, but admits that he charged the goods, given to the Maoris to Carroll's account, which has not been paid. The judges express doubts as to the agency being, proved. The case will only partly be heard here, and the other charges in the petition will be heard at Napier.
