Attempted Suicide
Yesterday morning information was brought in *iiat a man named' Barnes Atkinson, a laborer, working at Mnkino^ :>*>&• M'ackay's line, had atattempted suicide from delirum tremins. Constable Meehan went out at once, and found Atkinson bleeding profusely from the head from -scalp wounds which had been inflicted by •continuous blows from larger stones held in each ihand. A large surface of the scalp was beaten into a pulp, &nd the white skull laid bare in places. There was also a Jight cut under the jaw where be had attempted to open an artery, also a wound on one «f his arms. He was arrested and conveyed in a brake to the lookup, where on his arrival his wounds Were thorougly washed and cleaned. He was afterwards examined by Dr Johnston who recommended his removal to the Wanganui Hospital. Mr Thomas Foster, who discovered the man, informs us *hat it was about six o'clock in the morning when he found him lying firone on the ground. On lifting him aip he was quite stiff aad appeared •dead. Atkinson was brought before Mr Ward at the court this morning and remanded to Waaganui for medi«cal examinations. j
