By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright " fBBCrXBB's TBI.ROBAMS.I London, November 5. Obituary— Alfred Damett, O.M.GK, ex-Premier of New Zealand, aged 7G years. [Alfred Domett, 0.M.G., son of Mr Nathaniel Domett, was born at Oamberwell Grove, Surrey, on the 20th May, 1811, aad waa educated at Cambridge. Having purchased *ome land from the New Zealand Company, ho came to the colony amongst the earliest settlers in 1842; - Ou the; introduction of the new Constitution id 1848, Mr . Domett was appointed Oolonial Secretary and in 1851 he became Secretary for the whole of New Zealand. Entering the House as representative of Nelson, he formed a Govermnenfc in 1862, when tile affairs of the colony were in a most critical position. In 1860 he becaiiie Registrar-General of Land, arid in 1870 he was requested to undertake the administration of confiscated Jands, but in the following year he retired from public life; and returned to England. Seww created a C.M.G. in 1880. In 1872 Mr Domett published " Ranolf ?arid Amohia a South Sea Daydream," > poem descriptive of New Zealand and of the habits, legends, and character of the natives, which was favourably criticised by Browning, Tennyson, and Longfellow.
