The State of Parties in England
The news receired by cable that the municipal elections throughout England have gone slightly in favour of the Liberals, is very significant of the reaction which has set in throughout the country" in favour of Mr Gladstone. The various by-elections to Parliament which have recently taken place have shown this to some extent, and the change is now confirmed by the result of the municipal elections. These in England are fought on almost precisely the same party lines as the. Parliamentary elections, and often quite as keenly. They afford an excellent annual indication of the direction of public opinion on the party questions of the day, and in this instance they point to the strong probability of Mr Gladstone's early triumph and return to power at the head of a Parliamentary majority. — Post.
