Education Board
The ordinary monthly meeting <.* the above Board was held on Tuesday last. — Present— Messrs Careon (chair), Sanson, Bridge, Baker, Stevens, Bate. Appointments. — Ashhurst, Ellen Craven; Beaconsfield, J. Slipper's name to be forwarded to the committee. Inspector's reports. — The attention of the head master and assistant teacher at Halcombe be called to the Inspector's report. Leave of absence.— Mr Fry was granted leave of absence for three months. L. C. Hall and C. J. Cooke were also granted leave of absence to attend examinations. Retrenchment. — Mr Carson moved that a circular be addressed to all the School Committees in the district notifying them that, in the event of the school capitation being reduced by Parliament this session, the grants to committees will thereupon be proportionately reduced. — That in view of the probable reduction by Parliament of the education grant the chairman of the Board be authorised to call a special meeting of the Board to prepare a revised scale of general expenditure for submission to the Board at its next meeting.— Mr Bridge seconded the motion. — Mr Baker moved that if there was anything in the Financial Statement reducing the Education grant, and effecting the Board, the chairman be authorised to oall a meetof the Board.— Mr Bate seconded this. — Mr Stevens thought the discussion was premature. He believed that if there was any reduction the Minister of Education would give them notice as to how he wished the various Boards to act. If necessary he would rather move for a special committee. — Mr Notman asked when the reduction would be made, in reply to whiah the chairman stated that on the previous occasion it was made without any notice at aj.l. — Mr Notman did not care to see so important a matter relegated to a committee. The whole Board »houjd deal with it. —Mr Carson amended his motion as suggested, and it was carried as given above, the other being dropped by Mr Baker. Feilding. — Application for repairs to teacher's residence. — Resolved that the Board cannot deal with the matter at present.
