A storm of excessive violence raged in the English Channel last night, and a large number of vessels are reported to be wrecked. Several fatalities occurred on shore, owing to the high wind which prevailed along the coast. It is officially announced that Lord Lytton has been appointed British Ambassador, and has been created an Earl. The New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Tongariro arrived at Plymouth ! yesterday. Her cargo of frozen meat j has been examined and found to bern good condition. Melbottbne, October 30. The local manager of the National Mortgage and Agency Company (Limited) of New Zealand, reports as follows:— Shipping wheat remains steady at 3s 4d to 3s 5d per bushel. For malting barley 5s to 5s 9d per bushel is demanded, but holders are compelled to. accept lower prices in order to effect sales. New Zealand oats, feed sorts, are quiet at 2s 8d to 2s lOd per bushel; while milling varieties meet with a moderate inquiry at 2s lOd to 2s lid per bushel. NewJ Zealand oats, under bond, are quoted at 2s Id to 2s 5d per bushel.
