Manchester Road Board
J w An ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held on Saturday afternoon last. Present — Messrs 0. Bull, Pryce-Jones, and Wheeler. In the absence of the chairman, Mr Bull presMed. .
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
During the reading of the minutes, Messrs Macarthur and Tremewan took their seats, at the table.
Correspondence was read as follows: From R Currie, asking permission to fell a road line. *
From EL Walker, asking for right of way.t»luß : cottage.
From P. Blixt, offering to work on the roads for 6s per day. From S. Shepperd, asking permission to fell road Hne.
From Mrs Burton, a similar request. From Gordon Forlong, re change of name on rate roll. *

From Manawatu Road Hoard, re having the road along the railway line from the Oroua to Bunnythorpe declared a boundary road. ,

Nelson, asking for a concession of tolls in crossing the Gorgeibridgei Resolved, on the motion of Mr Macarthur, seconded by Mr Bull, That the requests of Mr Shepperd and Mr Currin be complied with, on the Board's usual terms, and that Mrs Burton be informed of the conditions on which she can fell the bush opposite section 102. "Resolved, on the motion of Mr Tromewan, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That" Messrs Holland and Jeffries' requests be granted in alteration of names on rate book; also, Gordon Forlong to transfer to H. Forlong. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Pryce- Jones, seconded ty Mr Wheeler, Thlit the names of W. F. and E. G. Elkington be substituted for that of Mr Fry on the rate book for sections 47 and 51, subdivision D, as requested Mr Gardner waited on the B<»ard, and explained the 'damage he had sustained by an accideut to his team - through the tad state of lohangina *«»ad. : '•' ' . ' . / ; Mr Tremewan spoke of his knew"f the bad state of the road. J^PJk reply to Mr Macarthur, Mr Gardner spoke to the effect that he would be prepared to waive his claim if the' -Board would put the road in a passable state. Mr Warne, who was present, explained a certain amount lie had expended upon the road. It would require about £40 more, which he was prepared to expend, and wait for a refund till the Board could pay him. Mr Macarthur spoke in strong support of this proposal, which he thought was only a reasonable one. The settlers were not asking for more than their due. Eegolreji,, on the motion, of Mr Macarthur, seconded by Mr Tremewan, That the sum of £40 be recouped to Mr Warnp for repairs on the Pobangiria road when No. 6 ward is in funds, the said £40 to' be ex* pended under the supervision of the Board's Engineer, and to his satisfaction.
Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Bull, That Mr George FidlerV request to substitute Ms name on valuation roll for section 30, D, Makino road, in place of .Mr John Milton's, be granted. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Pryce- Jones, That Mr Gibson Miller's, request for substituting his name «n rate roll for section 44, H, in place of Goldfinch aud Thompson, be granted: Jtf essrs W. L. Bailey and Revington Jones waited on the Board in support of tbe road from the Oroua to Bunnythoirpe along the railway line being proclaimed a boundary road. After a short discussion, it was refiolyed, on tbe motion of Mr Macarthjir, seconded' by Mr Bull, That the Manawatu Road Board be informed that the Manchester Road Board will agree to the road from the Oroua to Bunnythorpe along the railway line being .proclaimed a boundary road on condition that the Manchester Road Board- baa of said road. The matter of Mr Thomas Nelson's request for a concession of tolls in crossings the Gorge bridge was considered. .

Resolved, on the motion of Mr Pryce-Jonea, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That the consideration of Mr Nelson's request be postponed till next meeting of the Board. ; Resolved, on the motion of Mr Pryce-Jones, seconded by Mr Macarthur, Ijb^at tenders be called for the necessary culverts and cuttings on P*ollflMßii:'B road to make it available fbiP^affic:

tenders were put in for Nos. 1, 2, 3, and 4 contracts.
A short discussion followed the reading of the teuders, the general feeling of the Board being that they were on tha whole unsatisfactory, and except iv one or t#o cases very excessive, beyond the means of the Boar.l. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Pryce-Jones, That the tender of Mr Jackman for the supply of metal in No. 4 ward, and those of Mr James Fowl for the supply of metal in Nos. I, 2, 3, 5, and 6 wards be accepted. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Tremewau, That the Engineer be instructed to inspect tte Stanway road, and report upon the same at the next meeting of the Board.
Resolved, on the motion of Mr Pryce Jones, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That in the opinion of the Board the tenders for the maintenance of the roads in the district are excessive, that they be declined, and that the Clerk be instructed to return the deposits to the respective tenderers. The offer ef Mr Blixt to work on the road at 6s a day was accepted. Accounts amounting to £62 14s 9d were : passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned.
