In the sculling 1 race, Hanlan was leading by a length for the first mile, ! which, in rounding the buoy, he inj creased to two lengths, but he stopped rowing for an instant, and on resumcominenced to flag and pull unevenly. At the beginning of third mile Gauduur quickened his stroke, and passing his opponent, secured a lead of six lengths. Hanlan spurted, and reduced the gap, but was unable to maintain his speed. Gaudaur slackened as he neared the winning post, and rowed in an easy winner. Han- i lan declares that he was suffering from cold.
