Arrived — Alamanda from 'Frisco, at 8.30 a.m. Mr Gladstone is reported to be in a low state of health. A numbei' of shops were wrecked during a riot in Warwick. A terrible snow storm prevailed throughout the midland counties of England on January 8 and 9. The highways and railways were impassable, and some loss of life occurred. The Government has decided to purchase 40,000 additional horses, and half a million Manchester repeating rifles, to be ready by the Ist March. A slight scare occurred in. England arising from the mobilisation of two British ami3 r corps, and officers on furlough, belonging to regiments not on orders for foreign service, are stated to have been warned to hold themselves in readiness to report for duty, indicating that preparations are advancing for the formation of a third army corps. It further trauspired that the War Office is push» ing forward arrangements, pointing to the army and na ry reserves, and auxilhary forces being called out. The activity of the Admirality is still more ommou-. In Liber.il circles it is believed these preparations really mean war.
