Feilding Borough Council

-The usual fortnightly meeting of the above was held on Thursday last at the Council Chambers. Present — The Mayor, Mr Goodbehere, and CrsIjyne, Foster, Bishop; Fowles, Bartholomew, Worsf old, and Evans. The nuuutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. . " CORRESPOXEENCE. From W. Smith, re his daughter, Mrs R. Belfit. Report/of the Finance Committee, recommending accounts £48 10s lOd, and that of the Public Works Committee accounts amounting to £96 0s 3d to be paid, with the exception of 7s 6d for advertising meeting . of burgesses re formation of a Salvage ACorps, which item the Finance Coinconsidered " illegal." The following report of the Public "Works Committee was read : — To His "Worship the Mayor. Sir, — Having been requested at the last meeting of the Council to report as to the most necessary works to be carried out, your committee has carefully considered the matter, and would recommend the formation and culverting of the streets as follows, viz : Fitzroy street, from Beattie street, 8 chains, towards Denbigh street ; Hubner's road, from the railway crossiug to Mr Rink's .residence, about 10 chains ; North side of railway line, from Gladstone street to Russell street, 9 chains; "Weld and Fergusson streets, from Kimbolton road to Mr Heald's cottage, about 9 chains ; Monmouth street, from Derby street to Lytton street, about 25 chains ; North road and West street, from the Makino road to the boundary of the Borough, about 24 chains; Duke street, from Derby street to North road, about 21 chains ; Hebson street, from the railway line to Mr Daw's residence, about 7 chains; a total length of 113 chains, costing £148 10s. C. Bray, Engineer. Proposed by Cr Fowles, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the Public Works Committee's report re new works be adopted. Cr P. Thomson said the report only contained recommendations for necessary works which had from time to time been brought before the Council. He would support the motion. The Mayor objected to the Council authorising the expenditure of £150 without first consulting the Manager of the bank. Cr Fowles suggested that the words *' subject to the approval of the bank" be added to the motion.

This was done, and the resolution was adopted. Proposed by Cr Fowles, seconded by Cr P. Thomson, That in the event of the Borough Banker agreeing to the overdraft for new works mentiutied in the Public Works Committee's report of the present date, the Engineer proceed with the said works. - -Carried

With reference to the item 7s 6d f »r advertising the meeting re Salvage Corps, the Major stated he had authorised the expenditure which was perfectly " legal " Proposed by Cr Bishop, seconded by Cr Foster, That the report of the Finance Committee be adopted with the exception of that part which relates to the charge for advertising the meeting. re proposed Salvage Corps, the expenses of which shall be paid. — Carried.

There was only one tender for hire of teams and supply of metal for the year, viz. ;J. Beltit — 1 horse team 12s, 2 hnr o e team 18s per day, supplying metal 2s. Proposed by Cr Worsfold, seconded by Cr Evans, That the tender of J. Belfit for the supply of metal and one or two horse teams be accepted. — Carried.

The subject of Mr Smith's letter come up for discussion. The Mayor said Mrs Belfit had called on him, and he had referred ter to the Council.

Cr P. Thomson said he would put all sentiment aside. "It was a poor hen that couldn't scratch for one chick." Mrs Belfit could go to dances and dress well, and he did not think her an object of charity.

Proposed by Cr P. Thomson, seconded by Cr Worsfold, That the Town Clerk inform Mrs Belfit that unless she gives up possession at once of the cottage she now occupies, steps will be taken to compel her to do so, and that this be an authority to the Town Clerk to take the necessary steps to eject her if she refuses to go. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Worsfold, seconded by Cr Evans, That Mrs Gold be allowed 10s a week during the pleasure of the Council.— Carried. The Council then adjourned.
