The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1887. The Salvage Corps
A meeting was held on the 19th of January, at which the Mayor presided, for the purpose of taking steps towards forming a Salvage Corps for the Borough. A committee was appointed, consisting of four gentlemen each largely interested in tbe question, and two of whom were looked to as the probable leaders of the corps when established. A fortnight has now elapsed and nothing whatever has been done, notwithstanding the fact of our having been for the greater part of that time encompassed about with heavy bush fires, the smoke from which has enveloped the town as with a dense fog during several days. A fire from sparks carried by the wind, or from the dry grass acting as a conductor of the flames to the wooden houses, has been imminent every day. We feel sure that this delay on the part of the Committee
can be explained, but think it due to themselves, and to the public they should either take immediate action or resign the trust placed in their hands.
