Great Bush Fire at Lake Wakatipu
(PEB UNITED PRKSS ASSOCIATION ) Dua'edin, January 10. An extensive bush fire has been raging at the head of Lake Wakatipu since Wednesday, and has not yet burned itself out.
The whole bush from the Dart to the Greenstone River, covering about 4000 acres, has been on fire, and it will probably have completely destroyed the bush from which the timber for most of the mines has been drawn and which gave employment to some 80 to 1 00 men. Some huts have been destroyed, and at least two families are rendered homeless. The escape of a few housi • at Kinloeh was very narrow. The scene afc night is described as awe-inspiring. If the fire crosses the Greenstone River, it may almost completely denude one side of Lake Wakitupu of the timber which formed one of the characteristics of the beauty of the lake.
