Volunteer Regulations

X&st night's Gazette contains the new Volunteer regulations to come into force on the Ist of January. They are very complete, there being no iewer than 284 separate regulations, with long appendices. The minimum age of recruits is fixed at 17, except in special circumstances. Enrolments will take place quarterly, and the period of enlistment will be one year. The maximum strength of cavalry corps is 80, and of other corps 100, but capitation will not be granted for more than 65. There is provision for the formation of honorary reserve corps, who will find their own arms, ■ammunition, and accouti'ements, and will rwoive no pecuniary assistance •from Government. The medical staff is to be placed on a proper footing aad where d<»sired surgeon-m«j«»rw may be appointed to battalions. Garrison bands will be where there are not fewer than four corps, and £20 annually will 1-e granted 1o each. The proportion of bant'ismou is not to exceed live to each corps. Tiie rules for the examination and instruction of officers, for discipline, for musketry instruction aud as to capitation allowance, are elaborate ai.d clear.
