A REPLY.

TO TITE EDITOR OF THE STAR, Sib, — I** reply to Dr Monckton's grievance, which, appeared in your columns recently, I think he was bliad and very blind too in not laying a trap for the offenders before rushing into print, so that he might have brought them before the E.M. His remarks are very personal. He convicts without even the shadow of proof, and takes hearsay for facts. Strange to say, the three times his gates were found open, I was 6O dilatory that I saw nothing of his cattle, and still more strange, out of all the persons making those " bitter complaints" not one has brought an offender to justice, though the penalty is a heavy one, according to the Impounding Act. I also give Dr Monckton to understand that it was quite a common thing for people on rising to find their gates open, even before he was a resident in the district, or I held the position of Ranger. Complaints have been made to the Constable, and comments made on it through the Press. The position of Ranger is not a pleasant one at the host of timns, and if he does his duty he makes it still uiore unpleasant for himself. It is my opinion there are many who would not scruple to 'open gates, or anything else, if they thought they could get me into trouble ; of course, it is very simple and e«.sy for any person to say, Oh ! it must be the Banger, he bein»the only man reaping tho benefit, through cattle being impounded. I should have thought, from the position Dr Monokton holds, he would have thought twice before 'making such a personal attack on a public servant. — I am &c, J. TuejVek, Pound-keeper.
