Murder of Captain Gain
(MB UNITED *BBBS ASSOCIATION.? Tihabv, November 29. Hall was brought up charged with murder this morning. Mr White prosecuted, and Mr Berry defended. Arthur Bteadman repeated the evidence given in the previous cases as to the financial position of the prisoner's firm. Nothing new was elicited from this witness. Mr Slack Manager of the National Bank, and' Mr Wilson, clerk to Hall and Meason gave, formal '-"evidence. Both those witnesses and Stedman identified Hall's hand writingin the poison -book. The evidence of Davidson, insurance agent, and Knubly, solicitor, was a. repetition of the Supreme Court testimony. These witnesses occupied th» court till the luncheon adjournment. Mr W. J. Knubbley said,:— l was Captain Cain's solicitor.' The prisoner married Captain Cain's step-daughter en May 26tb, . 1885. Captain Caia told me about the lime of the wedding that he and Hall were not ou good terms. Captain Cain complained to me concerning Hall's treatment of him in regard to certain accounts." He told me this was tike cause of th» difference ; On December 15th I prepared a deed of covenant to which the parties were Captain. Cain, Mr F. Leeren, Mrs Hal], and Mrs Newtoa. The covenant was a mutual one,, and ' ; " the effect was that Captain Cain was to receive an annuity of I*3oo a year from January Ist, ISB6, and th» free occupation and use of Woodlands during his life time. . F. Leeren gave evidence of Hall's desire to get hold of his wif e*s money.— Arthur Ormgby, solicitor, proved to making Mrs HalPs will, leaving everything to the> prisoner. The court then adjourned till 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. This Day. The evidence to-day was chiefly & repetition of that at the inquest.
