The attendance is moderate and the wicket somewhat bumpy. The visitors winning the toss elected to bat but failed to make a stand against the New South Wales bowling, which was dead on the wicket. The first four batsmen, Shrewsbury, Scotton, Barlow, and Barnes, were all out for a total of 28. The only batsman reaching double figures was Read who scored 13, caught. The innings closed for 74 runs. The Home team then went in, tke last wicket falling for 111 runs. McDonnell made 32, bowled, Moses, 31, not out. The Englishmen had only time to commence their second innings and had made 4 runs without the loss of a wicket when the stumps were drawn for the day.
