The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, NOV. 20, 1886. A Truant Inspector

It is a matter of congratulation that the Feilding Scheol Committee have determined. to bring into operation the Compulsory Clauses of the Education Act to enforce the attendance of children at school. The objections some parents have to their families being educated is difficult to understand. In some instances we know of heads of families who consider they are conferring an obligation on the masters by allowing their children to attend. They tacitly ignore the advantages of education altogether, and seem to think their own lack of knowledge a sufficient exsuse for rearing their sons aad daughters in a similar condition of mental darkness. Wise statesmen have, however, decreed that the people must be educated even against their will. The means are provided at the expense of the colony, and laws enacted to ensure their being utilised in the required direction The duty of compelling the attendance of the children of Feilding who are wilfully kept at home by their parents, has been entrusted to excellent hands. We feel convinced that \?hat is necessary to be done will be done in a firm yet kindly spirit, without any harshness on the part of the Truant Inspector ; but we would suggest to those to whom the advice is necessary, that they do not wait to be forced to do what not only the law, but common sense requires, and send their childi en to school without further bother.
