The Oamaru Child Mystery

MRS SARGEONSON CHARGED WITH MURDER. [per united press association] Oamaku, November 5. The trial of Agnes Sargeonson, for the murder of her female infant, commenced at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day. The evidence of five witnesses was taken, and the case was adjourned until to-morrow. The evidence showed that the prisoner had been delivered of a child on the 18th of August last, and in September I she told the aeighbors that a person who was going to adopt it had oalled \ and taken it away. The suspicions of the neighbors being aroused, they informed the police. After making inquiries, a search was made in the garden at the house where the accused j lived, with the result that the remains of a child shockingly mutilated were found. The woman had been arrested at Clinton, and at the time denied that she bad ever been at Oamaru. The case will take a couple of days to finish.
