THE CAUSIT OF IT ALL.
Mm Taylor, the. wife of the murdered man, in her evidence before the Coroper, said: — On one occacion he asked my daughter to many him, and ahe replied tliat she did not want to be married, that her temper aud his would not agree, and he aaid she would not enjoy anyone else, that the next time he 'Went to town he would bring a ring or a . revolver. This was about three yeara ago, and tbat was all the grievance he had. I was present at the conversation, and I said she could please herself, and her father said the same, but she replied that ahe did not want to be married yet. We left it altogether to my daughter, and she refused him. He was then sailing the Mary (schooner), owned by Mr Murray, of Auckland, but I did not see the revolver or the ting, but I saw him. He came here on hie return trip, and asked how lizzie was. I replied that she was not at home, but he asked what he had done to send her away from her own homo. I^e said I knew where •he waa; that I%ad put her on board the Sunderlabd cotter, and sent her I away, but he would not leave the island until he had found iter. He found her. on that, occasion- fn the scrub, where she hid from him, and after some conversation, during which he said that if she did not marry him would marry nobody eke, he left the Louse. He had been several tunes to my house since that affair, but;! did not. remember him having made, use of any threats, but ehe bad heard from the ueighbora that he was going to finish us all off before he was alone. I was informed that he said thia several times. When he was leaving on Saturday morning, and I was at the stockyard, he told me he
was going. outside to. do for the lot, I suppose, my daughter and Tier husband, Seymour. After they left I returned to the house. I saw iny husband sitting against a box in my bedroom, with hie head drooping on his chest. I asked bim to speak, but he could not, and I found he was dead;, so I drew him to one side to straighten him but. I noticed that be W as bleeding from the head, but I did not notice .the wound, as * I was in a hurry to get away for fear they should return to kill me and my daughters. I left in a boat, arid crossed the bay to warn the neighbors, and i inform them otwhat had occurred, as well as: ior refuge, and did not return until now. When Penn £rst came to the house and asked for the butter, my buahand asked him what boat he belonged to, and he replied the Teviot, but he wanted it for the Tairua. — BelL

He made a stunning good -.speeelv anyway! What I like. ; about Gorge is that he's straight up and : down, and hits straight from the shoulder! His speech sounded mnch better tban it reads I Thats always the way with that slashing go.a«-you please oratory ! The natural effect i.« all lost in print ! He had the meeting with him all through! Rather I His opponents were conspicuous by their absence! It's one thing to pick holes in a chap's ceat behind his back, and quite another thing to meet him face to face at a public • meeting ! A publie man should'nt mind a little snow- hailing, though! Dees 'nt do to be thin-skinned ! Clean snowballs are all fair, but when it comes to putting mud and stones inside 'em, its time to stop it ! ii ■ - ■ Continuation of reading matter on Uhpage
