Volcano was the first to get away, and led the field at a terrible pace in the interests of Trident. After going £of a mile Chesham assumed the leading, position, and entering the straight led Trident by a length, Agloas being third. Half way down die straight Chesham appeared to be winning «a)sily, but Trident, under great punishment, made a gallant effort, and at the distance poet was level terms with the leader, and gradually forging ahead, won by a length amid great enthusiasm. Time, 2min. 39sec. SPECIAL TO'THE " BTAE. " Received November 1, 12.50 p.m. Melbourne, November 1. The weather is nice and cool this morning for training purposes. Trenton yesterday did the best mile of tbe season, and this morning was sent two miles at a moderate pace. Ben Bolt, Kiagfish, Crossfire, Commotion, .Lancer, Lord William, Bravo, Sheet Anchor, Britisher, Arsenal, and Recall were out and did serviceable .gallops. Trident, Monte Christo, and Hexham were treated to moderate exercise. Metal was sent a strong gallop and finished well. Malua is in splendid condition aud compassed the mile and a half in splendid style. Xitawa did a good gallop over the Oup distance. Cyclops spurted for a mile, finishing well. At Caulfield yesterday Little John did a splendid performance over the two. miles. Silvermine and Highland Chief were sent a mile and' a half, moving freely. In the Derby on Saturday, when Tounding home, Chesham did not roil Volcano on to tbe rails, but the latter horse tripped. Trident/ who waa behind those two, had, to fall out and go right round the horses.

Isonomy has come up with a rush, and has been backed for large amounts at 6to 1 ; Meteor and Bea Bolt, 100 to 12 (off); Little John, 100 to 10 (taken); Trenton, 100 to 7 (taken) ; Arsenal, Sheet Anchor, Crossfire, Xiord William, • and Hexham are weaker. The outsiders backed are IQtawa, Britisher, Jack Roach, and Bohemian. This Day, There was no change in the betting at midnight This morning is fine, , smd there ie evory prospect of a fine day. The town is full of people, and they are arriving in thousands. The number of visi tors from the euter I colonies ie greater than usual. The 1 Oup will be run at four o'clock, and it | is likely there will bo a field of thirty ! bornea. The favorites all right.
Meteor or Trenton should furnish the v winner, the former for choice, with Trident or Little John for third place. Cuuimotiou and Britisher are the best outsiders.
