M ncphei'son, com"*! ninnderof the British forces in Burmah, f died to-day, of fever, at Prome, on the j river Irrawady.- j A meeting of colonial agents and j genera! members of the City Corporation . was hold at the Mansion House to-day, ! in connection with the proposed Imperial Institute. The Lord Mayor, who was present, announced that it would be suggested that the Institute be erected on the site, and conducted on the linen, oi the present Colonial and Indian Exhi* bition. This was unanimously approve.! cf by the meeting, and it was decided that the Lord Mayor should convene a public meeting to give effect to these pro* posals. . It is expected that General Sir Frederick Roberts, Commander-in-chief at India, will succeed the late General Macpherson in command of the British expedition to -Burmah. Hyndman, one of the Socialist leaders, has written a letted to the papers, stating that great distress prevails among the working classes, and the proposed procession of the unemployed on the 9th prox. is a only means of compelling the | attention of the authorities to the distress. The Bank of England to«day raised the rate of discount 4 per cent. October 21. Lord Randolph Churchill arrived in London to«day frem Paris. Pabib, October 21. M. Waddington, the French Ambassador to the Court of St. James/has been instructed by bis Government to urge the withdrawal of British troops from Fgypt.
