Manchester Road Board

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held on Saturday afternoon last. Present— Messrs Lethbridge (chairman), Macartbur, Linton, •and Pleasants. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and coufiriued. A petition was put in from Messrs Warne and Beard for permission to lay down a tramway on the Pohangiua road, and the petition was granted. A deputation, consisting of Messrs W. L. Bailey, L. L. Bailey, F. Jeffrey, H. Derby, Revington Jones, and W. Masters, waited on the Board re the matter of a road from Taonui to Bunnythorpe, their principal object being to ascertain the opinion of the Board as to what was the best thing to be done to have the road made, and a bridge erected across the Oroua at Aorangi. Mr Macarthur referred to what he had said on the matter in a letter to the FFiidDi^e Stak, aud pointed out that the Board was willing to help the settlers. He suggested a portion of the road should be handed over to the Board from the Mauawatu Road Board. With reference to the bridge he 6aid that it could not be done without a loan from Government, and that there was no time to be lost in the matter as the subsidy to local bodies was not likely to last long. After a short conversation between the members of the deputation and the Board, it was agreed that the Manawatu Road Board be interviewed on the subject, and the deputation then withdrew. Messrs Jeffrey and Masters then waited further on the Board" with reference to the state of the Stoney Creek road, asking the Board to do something to put the road in a passable condition. The Board pointed out that the great difficulty was that they had not funds at present sufficient for this and other necessary works. Mr Macarthur recommended the deputation to get the Engineer to see what was required to be done and to report on the same, and as soon as possible the Board would do what it could in the matter. The following correspondence was read : — From H. Browning, asking permission to erect gates on the Mangaone road facing section 33. From Clerk of the Feiiding Borough Council, in pursuance of a resolution passed at its last meeting, asking the Board to place the Cemetery road in a passable condition. From W. Symonds, asking for change of his name on rate book to John Gower. From T. Flynn, re remuneration for certain proposed work. From James A. Ridley, of Halcombe, asking for renewal of slaughtering license. From P. Hanlon, asking the Board to do something in the matter of a swamp adjoining his property. From G. Wheeler, asking for change of his name on rate roll to Mr Silver, iv respect to sub. sec. E, Manchester Block. From R. K. Reed, stating that he was about te plant a live fence on boundary of his section 58, and asking permission to erect a temporary fence to protect same while growing. From Clerk of Carterton County Council, asking for a copy of the Board's bye-law respecting drainage. From Registrar's office, Wellington, two letters, re matter of a judgment summons for rates. From Clerk of Kiwitea Road Board, re state of the Valley road, and asking the Board to pay half the cost of clearing the same. From W. Symonds, with cheque J ior £5 12s 6d for rates. Mr Linton proposed, and Mr Macarthur seconded, That the Clerk's salary be raised to £75 per annum.— •CarriedResolved, That the name of W. Symonds be placed on the rate book for seeiaon 1 F instead of J. Gower. The request of H. Browning to erect gates on the Mangaone road was refused. Proposed by Mr Linton, seconded hj Mr Pleasants, That in answer to the Feilding Borough Council this Board is not in a position to do anything to the Cemetery road.— Carried. The request of James A. Ridley for renewal of slaughtering license was granted. Proposed by Mr Linton, seconded "by Mr Pleasants, That it be pointed out to the Kiwitea Road Board that this Board is already paying for the clearing of the Valley Road, and is net in a position at present to do any more. — Carried. Resolved, That the Engineer be instructed to ask the Railway authorities to allow tho Board to put in a crossing at Wilson's in Cemetery Une. Accounts amounting to £497 18s 3d were passed for payment, and thf Board adjourned.
