Shocking Outrage at Sydney

Six- other arrests besides those previously mentioned hare been made in connection with the Moore Park outrage. The men. in custody include the cabman, who, it is alleged, drove the girl Hicks to the scene of the outrage. Hicks lias made a statement, in which she says that she comes from Bathurst, where she was educated at the convent school. She came to Sydney to find her uncle, but failed to do bo. She took service in two or three places, and was in search of a situation when she was accosted by a cabman, who offered to drive her to a registry office. She first declined the offer, "but utimately got into the cab, and was driven to Moore Park, where the cabman attempted to assault her. Her screams attracted a young: man, and the cabman drove off . Her rescuer offered tn conduct her to the tramway, but he led her into the scrub, where she rested while he gathered flowers. Afterwards he made improper proposals t« her, and two young men, attracted by her succession "of cries, j came to her relief. The first young then made off, but returned with several companions, who drove off the other two and then took the girl into the scrub, where they knocked her down and committed a succession of assaults, which rendered her unconscious. One or two circumstances throar some suspicion upon the girl's ! previous good character ; but there is not the slightest doubt that she was the victim of a terrible outrage. The police have since amested William Hill, aged 22, an engine fitter; Ge«rge Duffy, aged 18, a wool washer ; M : chael Mangan ; Hugh Miller, 19; George Keegan, 19, a laborer ; Charles Sweetman, 36, a cabman; Lessie Douglas, 18, a plasterer ; John Puller, 21, a marble polisher; and Michael Donnelan, 18, no occupation, for being concerned in the outrage. The accused have all been identified by the girl, who is in a terrible condition.— Argus Telegram.
