Trade
The Loudon Times, of July 30th con- i eludes an article on trade with the 1 following significant sentences : — " The economic condition of society is, c at present, such that ne trade can long s ?-omain prosperous unless it is rather difficult to construct the plant needed I for it, or unless the persons engaged c in it have a monopoly granted them s ' by law, as in the case of patents. On the other hand, the abundant supply " of articles of general consumption is obviously an enormous advantage to S( the community at large, provided it is t
ot a more temporary abundance due _ insane competition, to be followed y an excessive scarcity when the -mpetition has ceased." At the Intercolonial Trades con■ress at Adelaide, Mr Morris, the 'resident, read his inaugural address, a the course of which he said : — [ Although I may safely congratulate ou on the vast strides the trades and ibor organisations have made in this Southern Hemisphere, I think there ,re signs of a mighty struggle in the tear future between capital and labor, i, struggle that will test our powers of mdurance, and that will take all our orce to successfully resist, and it heloves us to have our armour in good •epair, to improve .and federate our >rganisations to such an extent that it the call to battle they may be noved as one man. Then and then jnly shall we be able to make victory i certainty."
