There has been a discus^on in the Municipal Council of Newcastle, N S.W. or. t.m question of water supply. There vrcre the usual platitudes, until Alderman W enlivened the meeting by the brilliaut suggestion that " meteors should be attached to each house." A remarkable case will shortly be derided in the Court of Chancery. About five years ago, Mr Ayling, of Portsmouth, died, leaving his property to his wife during her widowhood, but, if she mar» tied again, it was to be divided among their seven children. In 1883 Mrs Ayling married, and the property was accordingly divided. Two years later, how » ever, it turned out that the second marriage was invalid, the husband being a bigamist, and Mrs Ayling found herself deprived both of husband and of property. She has now applied to the Court for a restitution of the property which her husband left her "for life or widowhood." The case is complicated by the fact that one ©f the sons has disposed of his share ; and altogether there is the prospect of some profitable work for the awyers. — Truth. Hr Gavin, of the Treasury, at the request of the Canterbury ' hamber or Commerce, has prepared a table of the assets of the colony, from which I take the fol« lowing: -Value of real property, exclusive of railways, crown and native lane's, £97, () "U.OOO (in round numbers) ; value of assessed property in 1885, £112,000,000 lire stock on the Ist or April 18S6 ; 15,500,001) shenp, £250,000 horses, 750---O;K> head of cattle, nnl £250,000 pigs. This does not include live stock belonging to na;ies vdae of railways, £12.500,000; approximate value of Crown lands, £10,250,0 0; value of telegraphs, £500,---000. There is no estima eof personality. Tiie value of real pr -perty in private hands is set down at £100,000,000.
