The Customs and L nd Tax Bills passed their final stages in the Assembly last night. There appears to be an idea that the council will reject the Land Tax Bill. Severe and destructive floods are being experienced in the Tumut district. The Federated Seamen 1 * Union have passed a resolution condemning the inhumanity shown by the captain and officers of the VI anposa in lashing up men by the thumbs because they were unable to stand the work of the stokehole, and pledging themselves to call npon the Government of the Colony to use their influence to prevent boats carrying mails being manned bj Chinese.

A narrow escape from a railway disaster occurred on Wednesday morning near Ipswich. A train hud just passe I an embankment when about four chains off a landslip occurred. Two trains had, within ten minutes of the mishap, passed over the embankment. The damage is estimated to cost several thousand pounds.

The saw-mill proprietors are urging upon the Government the necessity of imposing a further duty on imported undressed timber.
