The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, SEPT. 14, 1886. Delegates to N.S.W.

Considerable dissatisfaction is being expressed at the appointment- of Mr J. D. Lance, M.H.R., and the Hon. Mr Peter as the representatives of New Zealand to the Stock Conference to be held in Sydney. It is admitted that Mr Lance may know something about sheep, he haying been for some years a runholder in Canterbury, but Mr Peter is not credited with any practical knowledge of stock or stockraising. It is a great pity that the Government should hare selected only South Island men. We feel convinced that it would have been wiser to have taken a sheep farmer from Canterbury or Otago, and a cattle raiser from this coast or Napier, where men are to be found in plenty who not only understand stoi k and the several breeds best adapted for certain localities, but have the power to convey their infor. station in language " understandable of the people" who have devoted the best years of their lives to acquiring a thorough knowledge of the subject. The ignorance of the New Zealand men on questions brought before them will be painfully apparent at the Conference, and although they may be creditable representatives of the gentlemen of the Colony, they will make " a poor show" among the cattle kings of New South Wales. Mr Gk S. Cooper, Under-Secretary, has been selected to represent the Sheep Inspectors, as it has been undesirable to send any of the " professionals," as the present time is their busy season. Mr Cooper goes " armed with all the necessary powers for the occasion," but wanting the necessary technical knowledge to make " his powers" of the slightest possible use. The whole affair looks as if the three gentlemen were going to have a very pleasant holiday at the expense of the Colony.
